A conversation with: Siposetu Duncan

Siposetu Duncan

From shooting with Nagnata, content creation for Elizabeth Arden, ambassador roles as well as of course working with Daily Wellness Siposetu and her content are beautiful, engaging and fresh.

Daily Wellness founder Sophia sat down with Siposetu to discuss her wellness within our latest lockdown in Auckland and what she is using to move through the challenges of being an online business while in a pandemic.

Sophia: How did you get into content creation and “influencing”?

Siposetu: I messaged my friends back in 2019 and asked them what they think I’m good at. Majority said ‘fashion’. I then created my account (@siposetuduncan) to share my styled looks. I used my Instagram page as a digital scrapbook and a way to express myself. I started taking photos of my outfits using my iPhone 6. I would set my phone up on a makeshift tripod and set the self timer for 10 seconds.

After a few months of fun, i realised how I should take it more seriously. I then asked myself, “how can I improve my craft ?” So I invested in a good quality camera and watched 100+ YouTube tutorials on how to take photos, pose and edit. I still ask myself how I can improve regularly.

Always learning.

Sophia:
Ok I am a self confessed terrible photographer, openly mocked by my family and friends for never taking a good pic, a selfish question - what are your top tips for getting the shot.

Siposetu
If you’ve seen the vision of what you’d like to create - own the vision and take as many photos as you like or until you’ve got ‘that’ shot. Also, take your time. Rushing could mean you having to re-shoot again, which can be annoying and time consuming.

Sophia:
The digital landscape is changing so rapidly, with the algorithm for instagram and push toward video, what is your experience with the instagram algorithm and what would you say you are focusing on now to increase engagement?

Siposetu:
It’s been a rollercoaster ride. It can get discouraging when you’ve worked hard on a project or content but then the algorithm suddenly chooses to not push your work forward.
My mindset now isn’t to fully rely on the algorithm to get ‘noticed’ or new followers (although that would be amazing) but to keep being consistent. Consistency looks like posting reels regularly, engaging (authentically - you don’t want to come off as disingenuous or desperate when talking to people online), stories, etc.
Growth will follow.

While in lockdown it must be frustrating not being able to shoot at different locations or create new content have you built a new routine that you are using to move through that or focused on other projects that allow you to feel productive?

Siposetu:
I’m grateful that I am able to get work even during lockdown. A few brands have had to cancel many shoots for their upcoming campaigns and have had to reach out to content creators to create content from home. I’ve had the privilege to create something right here at home — it’s a great feeling as it feels like I’m helping brands with their launch. These job opportunities have kept me stimulated and distracted. My routine has changed compared to the first week of lockdown. I’ve got something to look forward to. Instead of sitting in-front of the TV all day, I get busy with work and reward myself with TV time.

Sophia:
How have you been prioritising your mental health in the last couple of weeks?Have you got any favourite online resources that you lean on eg. Headspace, yoga or other?

Siposetu:
Lots of speaking out and sharing my emotions and fears with my husband. This has helped me cope with my mental health.

Sophia:
Do you have any personal mantras or words that you live by?

Siposetu:
Be yourself and give yourself a shot!

Sophia:
How do you prioritise your wellness while in lockdown? Have you intruded anything new?

Siposetu:
I’ve been eating regularly, which is a HUGE bonus and achievement for me. I’ve broken old habits and now eating properly. Before lockdown, I wouldn’t eat as much because of the work load + stress but now that we’ve had more time, I’ve been more intentional — I will be working on this when things go back to normal as well. Quite nervous but I know I’ll be able to do it.

Sophia:
What are your favourite ways to care for your skin/ritual you never deviate from?

Siposetu:
A new favourite way is drinking water!!! I use to be terrible terrible at drinking water but now I am (I’ve downloaded an app that reminds me to drink water every hour). I can see the difference in my skin, especially around the eye area. I don’t have much dryness around the nose either. I used to have dry, peeling skin around my T-zone areas even after doing my skincare routines. I realised after drinking water that my skin was better.

Sophia:
Fav Daily Wellness product?

Siposetu:
My favourite daily wellness product has to be the essential radiance nutrient dense spirulina capsules!

Sophia:
Thank you x
